OUR PROVINCE

Milne Bay Province (MBP) in Papua New Guinea spans an area of 14,345 kmĀ² and is home to a population of 276,512 people. The province’s diverse geography, encompassing mountains, coastal regions, and islands, presents both opportunities and obstacles for development. However, the province faces challenges such as the scattered nature of its islands, the impact of rising sea levels, incidents of sea piracy, and limited transportation services, which significantly increase the cost of delivering goods and services to the region.

Despite these challenges, Milne Bay Province holds potential for development in various sectors. Industries such as mining, forestry, fishing, aquaculture, and tourism offer opportunities for economic growth. However, the rugged terrain poses transportation and infrastructure challenges that need to be addressed to fully utilize these opportunities. Additionally, the province must confront the threat of rising sea levels, which can adversely affect coastal areas and islands, and implement measures to ensure the safety of transportation and combat sea piracy.

To overcome these challenges and unlock the province’s development potential, it is essential to prioritize investments in infrastructure, climate change adaptation strategies, and initiatives that enhance transportation services. By addressing these issues, Milne Bay Province can foster sustainable development, improve livelihoods, and maximize the benefits from its diverse resources and natural beauty.
